How to Check, Update and Roll Back Septentrio mosaic-X5 Firmware

Short answer: to update a Septentrio mosaic-X5, first check the installed version (web interface Identification page, or the command lif,Identification), save your configuration, then load the new .suf file through the web interface (Admin › Upgrade) or Septentrio’s RxUpgrade tool over USB. Don’t power off during the upgrade, and check the version and configuration afterwards. From firmware 4.15.x the IP interfaces (web interface, Ethernet-over-USB and TCP) require a username and password, so record your credentials before upgrading. If you need to roll back, flash the older .suf with RxUpgrade over a USB virtual COM port.
Updated November 2026. Applies to Eview receivers built on the mosaic-X5 (HB6, HB56, HB62). The mosaic-H receivers (HB6 Pro, HB56H) use the same tools, but always read the release notes for your exact module and version.
1. Check the current firmware version
- Web interface: connect the receiver over USB and open
192.168.3.1(Ethernet-over-USB). The version is shown on the identification page. - Command line: in a terminal or RxControl, send
lif,Identification. The reply includes the firmware version. - RxTools: RxControl also shows the receiver identification when it connects.
Write the version down. You will need it to compare release notes, and to roll back if the new version causes problems in your system.
2. Before you update: a 5-point checklist
- Read the release notes for the target version. Look for changes to interfaces, output formats and security settings.
- Save your configuration. Send
lstConfigFile,Currentand keep the output, or export it from the web interface. An upgrade can clear the stored configuration. - Record or set your credentials if you are moving to 4.15.x (see section 4).
- Use USB or Ethernet, not a serial port. Serial upgrades work but are slow.
- Use stable power and disconnect anything else that shares the receiver’s ports, such as a flight controller or companion computer, so nothing interrupts the transfer.
3. How to update mosaic-X5 firmware
Option A: web interface (simplest)
- Connect the receiver to your PC with USB, power it on and wait about 10 seconds.
- Open
192.168.3.1in a browser. - Go to Admin › Upgrade. This needs User access level.
- Click Choose file, select the
.suffile and click Start upgrade. - Wait for the confirmation. The receiver restarts when it has finished.
Option B: RxUpgrade (RxTools), also the recovery route
Install Septentrio RxTools on a Windows PC and open the .suf file with RxUpgrade, or start it from RxControl’s File menu. Select the receiver’s USB virtual COM port as the connection. This route doesn’t depend on the web interface, so it is the one to use for downgrades and for recovering a receiver that no longer responds over IP.
Option C: command line or FTP (integrators)
For scripted updates, exeResetReceiver,Upgrade, none puts the receiver into upgrade mode. When it reports that it is ready for the SUF download, send the file in binary mode. The receiver can also fetch an update from an FTP server with exeFTPUpgrade. Check the reference guide for your firmware version for the exact arguments.
4. What changes in firmware 4.15.x: login on IP interfaces
From version 4.15.1, the mosaic-X5 requires a user-defined username and password on its IP-based interfaces: the web interface, Ethernet-over-USB and TCP ports. On first login you create the account using the factory credentials given in the reference guide for that version. The COM and USB serial ports are not affected unless you change their access level.
What this means in practice:
- A host that talks to the receiver over TCP or the web API will need the credentials after the upgrade.
- Flight controllers and robot computers that use a UART or USB serial link usually keep working, but test this on the bench before updating a fleet.
- Store the credentials with the receiver’s configuration. If you lose them, recovery goes through a factory reset and RxUpgrade over USB.
5. After the update: verify and restore
- Send
lif,Identificationand confirm the new version. - Compare
lstConfigFile,Currentwith the configuration you saved. Re-apply any missing settings (COM port baud rates, output streams, RTK correction input, antenna offsets, heading settings). - Save the working setup so it survives a restart:
exeCopyConfigFile,Current,Boot. - Check that your host system receives data: position, fix type, heading and corrections.
Flight controller stopped receiving data after the update? In most cases the COM port configuration has changed, not the hardware. Check the baud rate and input/output settings of the port wired to the autopilot, compare the Current and Boot configuration files, and confirm that the autopilot’s GNSS driver settings match. Our guide on which GNSS receiver to use with Pixhawk covers the wiring and driver basics.
6. How to roll back mosaic-X5 firmware
- Download the older
.suffor your module from Septentrio’s support resources. - If you are going back from 4.15.x to 4.14.x, you may need a factory reset first, which also clears user credentials. A downgrade through the web interface or TCP needs a login, so use RxUpgrade over a USB virtual COM port instead.
- Flash the older version with RxUpgrade, power cycle the receiver, then restore and save your configuration (section 5).
7. Receiver not responding after a failed update
- Disconnect other boards and hosts that share the receiver’s serial ports, then connect the receiver’s USB port directly to a Windows PC.
- Run RxUpgrade over the USB virtual COM port and flash the firmware again.
- If the receiver still doesn’t respond, it can be put into its waiting-for-SUF-download state for recovery. Follow the procedure in Septentrio’s documentation, or contact us.
- Don’t keep power cycling a receiver halfway through an upgrade. Wait for the upgrade to finish, or for it to time out.
Firmware support for Eview receivers
Eview receivers are built on Septentrio modules, so they use Septentrio firmware and tools. See our mosaic-X5 and mosaic-H firmware page for release information, and the Septentrio mosaic-X5 page for the receivers built on it (HB6, HB56, HB62). If you integrate receivers into a product, tell us your host interface and we can tell you which firmware version we have validated: sales@gnss-solutions.com.
FAQ: mosaic-X5 firmware
How do I check the mosaic-X5 firmware version? Open the web interface at 192.168.3.1 over USB and view the identification page, or send the command lif,Identification from a terminal or RxControl.
What file format is mosaic-X5 firmware? Septentrio firmware upgrades use .suf files. Load them through the web interface (Admin › Upgrade), RxUpgrade in RxTools, or the receiver’s upgrade command.
Does a firmware update erase my mosaic-X5 configuration? It can. Save the output of lstConfigFile,Current before you update, check it afterwards, and save the working setup with exeCopyConfigFile,Current,Boot.
Why does my mosaic-X5 ask for a password after updating? From firmware 4.15.1, the web interface, Ethernet-over-USB and TCP interfaces require a username and password. You create the account on first login using the factory credentials in that version’s reference guide. Serial and USB COM ports are not affected by default.
Can I downgrade mosaic-X5 firmware? Yes. Flash the older .suf file with RxUpgrade over a USB virtual COM port. Going from 4.15.x back to 4.14.x may need a factory reset first.
